The founders, Bastiano and Carmela, come from herding families in the historic Barbagia region, in central mountainous Sardinia. More precisely, Bastiano is from Bitti, while Carmela’s father was from Fonni and her mother from Mamoiada. The main economic activity of Barbagia was, and still is, sheep farming and cheese production. However, in lowland villages like Mamoiada, vine cultivation has ancient roots. Carmela’s maternal family, Aunt Tiressa, were in fact winemakers. Herders from Bitti and Fonni used to practice transhumance, moving their flocks to the coastal plains during winter to escape the harsh mountain climate. Many families eventually settled permanently in these hospitable areas, while maintaining their traditional livelihood.
When their families settled in Anglona—the historic region where modern Valledoria is located—Bastiano and Carmela met and decided together to revive traditional winemaking. Supported by a land and climatehistorically suited for viticulture, they planted vineyards and founded the winery, soon joined by their children, Mariateresa and Antonio.
How We Began
In 2001, we decided to plant the vineyard and build the first facilities. In spring 2003, we planted the vines—or, as we say in Sardinian, “hamus pastinatu.”
Passion
From the very beginning, our passion for the land and the world of wine has sustained us. We were also greatly supported by a group of friends and relatives specialized in vine cultivation and winemaking, as well as by our own previous experiences in agronomy and business.
